Petanque league celebrates

The local summer petanque league 2017 players recently gathered at the Pipemakers Arms, for the league’s end of season presentation night where 33 trophies were presented to top teams and top players. 
The league comprises 45 teams in six sub-leagues, five of which play on a Tuesday evening and one on a Wednesday.
Tuesday A league winners: Tenterden Club A; runner-up, Warren B, New Romney. V Serra from Tenterden Club A was the top player in the league and the leading lady player was H Clove from the Fat Ox, Tenterden.
The B league winning team was Warren Inn, New Romney, closely followed by the Dolphin A from Lydd. Leading players in the league were: men, N Elliott, Warren Inn; ladies, R Coombe, Dolphin.
The Cock Inn Peasmarsh won the C league with Camber Castle the runner-up. Top players were: men, R Banister, White Hart, Newenden; ladies, B Martin-Lewis, Rye Harbour Social Club.
In the D league, Two Sawyers, Pett were the top team with Millers Arms, Hastings, the runner-up. Two players shared the top spot for men: P Clifford, Two Sawyers and M Judge, William The Conqueror.  J Glazier, Queen’s Head, Icklesham was top lady player.
E League winners were: Royal Oak, Wallington and  just one point adrift in second was the White Dog, Ewhurst Green.
Lady player K Matthews from The Rainbow Trout, finished ahead of the men to be leading player. P Lambert, Royal Oak, was second.
In the Wednesday league, Horntye Park, Hastings, won the league narrowly from the Queen’s Head, Icklesham.
The leading individual players were: men, P Turner; ladies, M Mills from the Queen’s Head team.
At the end of each league match it is a tradition that a final game is played with the losers buying beers for the winners.
The teams that had most beers brought for them were: Tenterden Club A, Dolphin A, Camber Castle, Two Sawyers, Royal Oak and Horntye Park A.
The individual players competition was held at the Varne Boat Club, Littlestone and was won by R Thomas, Cock Inn, and runner-up was D Bartholomew of Rye Harbour Holiday Park.
