Run ancient trails

A brand new race is set to make its mark on the local running calendar this autumn. Rye Ancient Trails is a scenic and challenging 30k multi-terrain race, taking place on Sunday September 9.

Starting and finishing in the medieval town of Rye, the single-lap route winds its way through ancient woodland, orchards and farmland on trails, footpaths and quiet country lanes, linking the Norman churches of Rye, Iden, Beckley, Northiam and Peasmarsh – a true steeplechase!

The event is organised jointly by local race management company Nice Work and Rye Runners, with sponsorship from The George in Rye hotel and raising money for the Oliver Curd Trust (Charity No. 1124648).

Martin Burke, Nice Work Founder and Race Director said “We’ve created a route that showcases the best running terrain the area has to offer whilst involving the local community to retain a local feel.”

The undulating multi-terrain route (75% off-road) includes 1,500ft of climb, with numerous gates and stiles to be negotiated – but the stunning scenery and well-stocked aid stations will keep runners going to the finish. For runners not up for the full 30k, there is a 15k option, too – sharing the same start and finish. The two routes diverge at Peasmarsh, with the 15K re-joining the 30k route for the final 5km stretch.

Runners will be started off by Rye’s town crier outside The George in Rye hotel at 9:30am, from where they will pass under the historic Landgate arch to begin their epic journey. They will later be welcomed in to the finish with a free beer from Brede-based brewing company, The Three Legs, sample products from Rye-based natural skincare company Wideye and a bespoke medal depicting the Rye skyline.

Alongside the usual energy snacks and drinks at the race’s five aid stations, runners will find quirkier fare including handmade biltong courtesy of The Bell in Iden’s south African landlord, local apple juice from Dengate’s Farm Stall and cakes from Will’s Bakery in Northiam.

Sam Murphy who set up Rye Runners in August 2010 said, “We’re really looking forward to welcoming the runners taking on The Ancient Trails in its inaugural year and hope this will become an annual fixture.”
