The weather was disappointing on Sunday, April 28 but the turnout for the taster session at the Bowls Club was not. A steady stream of people of all ages came to find out more about the game. There were experts on hand to explain and everyone was given the opportunity to roll the bowls and see how they scored.

Eventually, the sun did come out and tea and cakes were enjoyed by over fifty people who came. The club was excited to announce that they had sixteen new members sign up for the season. This will give them a great boost and they look forward to welcoming the newcomers to practice sessions.

Ruth Palmer explained that when she saw the poster advertising the Open Day she thought she would come along and give it a go. She had never played bowls before but thought why not learn a new skill, and she wanted to help keep the club stay alive. She really enjoyed it and feels it is good to get out and meet new people.

Niki and Andy Stuart also came to support, Niki saying:” Despite the weather we thought that we would come down and support the Bowls Club and I have always fancied having a go at bowls and the open day gave me the impetus to come and try. We have both had such a lot of fun and we are going to sign up as members. It is good to see the community rallying around to try to prevent the club’s closure.”

Clllr Mike Boyd also came to show his support for the club.

Graham Ellis came because he was curious about what the game of bowls entailed. “This is a club and I wondered how often they played: today was a great day to find out. I have received some helpful tuition, and it is good to give it a go.”

The morning practice sessions run from 10.30am and are Monday, Wednesday (on non-match days) and Friday. There is a plan to run an evening session and details of this will follow as soon as it is confirmed.

Of course, there is a long road to travel to save the club but this is a positive start. Sponsorship is needed so if any local businesses would like to get involved do get in touch.
