Don’t be a tosser!

The beach and car parks at Camber were almost spotless in the morning on Monday, June 23, despite the thousands and thousands of visitors who came on the hottest weekend of the year. They left behind a lot of rubbish, but by 9am most had all been cleaned up. It was the same at Winchelsea Beach too, albeit a bit later in the day.

All thanks to the fantastic work from the council teams, their contractors Biffa, and volunteers who filled bags and bags of bottles, waste food, broken tents, destroyed toys – and far far worse too.

They really shouldn’t have had to, should they?

The Camber residents’ stories are, as usual after a hot weekend, horrific. Parking chaos and shouting matches, but the amount of rubbish left behind is just incomprehensible.

Full bin? Just leave your waste piled up wherever you fancy. Can’t face taking your rubbish home? Not a problem, just throw it wherever you like and somebody will pick it up for you. Or just let it get washed out to sea.

It’s not just rubbish, the shortage of public toilets is also an issue – you can work out the rest…

There’s clearly a need for more bins (and public toilets) especially away from the car parks at Camber, but how do we stop people littering and (literally) dumping on the beaches?

Another anti-littering campaign? Do signs saying “Leave nothing but footprints” or “Take your litter home” work?

We can’t just keep telling people leaving litter behind is anti-social, dangerous and environmentally damaging. Your suggestions, please.

  1. It would really help to have seagull proof bins on the beach. As soon as the large bins fill up the seagulls swoop in and empty large amounts of waste back onto the beach. On a windy evening this is a disaster as the cleaning team often don’t arrive until the next morning. I have seen bins with bird proof covers in other resorts, and would welcome a look at options for Camber.

  2. I don’t have an answer, it’s incomprehensible to me how people are so antisocial. It’s a reflection of our society, the 80% 20% rule, the minority ruin it for the rest.

Clearly, signage has no impact and why would it? If you’ve been bought up to litter, a sign makes no difference. Depressing, sorry.

  3. Fixed Penalty Notices set at the same level as Lambeth Council’s penalty for littering (£400 reduced to £250 if paid within 14 days).

  4. A sad reflection on society and attitudes in the UK unfortunately – Absolutely no consideration for anyone else its all about ‘me’.
Parking fines should be hundreds of pounds not £70. Littering and fouling likewise but it needs to be enforced.
70 parking tickets is nothing compared with the number of drivers parking illegally over the weekend. These breaches need enforcing from 8am in the morning to 8pm at least. We all know when these so called ‘red days’ are likely to happen so lets plan for them – properly.

  5. What it needs is a barrier at either end of the village. Once the car park is full, close the barriers to all but residents etc

Yes, they need to manned, but might be cheaper than parking wardens.

As for illegally parked cars, tow them away.

  6. Can someone, possibly our Labour MP tell me what an affordable house is in terms of cost, I heard today on this mornings ITV a comment by the Deputy Prime minister no less, confirming 300,OOO, (three hundred thousand) to re-iterate were going to be built, so, are they £200,000, £300,000, or even 4 or 5 hundred thousand. What is actually an affordable new build house.?

N.B, The borrowing costs for the Government are now higher than the Liz Truss saga.
