Visitors to the St Mary’s Church Fête on Saturday 18 July were given the rare opportunity to climb the tower and try their hand at ringing the famous church bells under the guidance of the experienced bell-ringing team.
Among those keen to accept the challenge was the mayor of Rye, Councillor Chris Hoggart, who took his turn on the ropes and discovered that bell-ringing requires far more skill, timing and concentration than first appears.
Since becoming mayor, Councillor Hoggart has become a familiar face across the town, enthusiastically supporting local organisations, charities and community ventures. His willingness to join in the activities at the fête reflected the approachable and community-minded spirit he has brought to the role.
The bell-ringing experience proved to be one of the day’s most popular attractions, giving residents and visitors alike a fascinating insight into one of St Mary’s oldest traditions. For many, it was a memorable chance to experience a centuries-old skill that continues to play an important part in the life of the church and the town.
Learning to ring church bells is challenging but highly rewarding. It requires rhythm, coordination, and mental focus rather than heavy physical strength. Mastery of basic bell handling and control typically takes a few months.
Bell ringing practice is at 7.30pm on Thursday evening at St Mary’s and the team is very happy to welcome new bellringers and show them the ropes.
