Rye Bowls Club (RBC) has recently celebrated completion of its first independent year, at the annual club meal. It was held at The Mermaid Inn, on 20 February at lunch time, where more than 40 members enjoyed an excellent meal provided by the president and co-owner of The Mermaid, Judith Blincow.

The club captain, Roy Dyer, reviewed last year’s season and shared plans for 2026, which will start with the Open Day, on Sunday 26 April. This popular start to the season is open to anyone who wants to “give it a go” and enjoy a free afternoon game on the green.

Ray Palmer explained the next big project for the rejuvenation of the club. Last year much effort and expenditure was put into the bowls green by Ray and his team. However one feature remains to be remedied.

This is the ditch that surrounds the green. It has been neglected by those previously responsible for maintenance and the club plans to resolve that this year. RBC appreciates the prime position that it occupies, directly below The Lookout, from which many visitors to Rye admire the view. With that in mind, the club wishes to maintain the highest standards, as it represents the town. Andy Stuart, Mayor of Rye and club member spoke encouragingly about the progress RBC has made and concerning its plans for the future.

To that end new initiatives to be undertaken include the training of club coaches, giving it improved ability to guide its growing membership, as well as investing in training first aiders. Also the 2026 season will see more club activities, both on the green and socially. One highlight will be the club Open Tournament which was successfully reinstated last year. It will take place again in July, when we expect 16 invited teams to battle for the year’s title.

Rye Bowls Club welcomes anyone who has an interest in playing lawn bowls, be that simple fun, exercise or competitively. All are welcome. For any further information please email Ian Scott – Club Secretary. ryebowlsclub@gmail.com
