Rye College is performing The Wizard of Oz in six months’ time. Audrey, from the Rye News Press Club, has been following the auditions in January.

I interviewed Hannah in year 9 who is playing Dorothy in the second half of the musical.

She wanted to audition for Dorothy because she really enjoyed being a part of last year’s production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, when she played Candy Cane and wanted to challenge herself with a bigger role.

Hannah thought the audition went well but she was nervous about performing the song How long will I love you? by Ellie Goulding. She only got a few verses mixed up but overall it went well. The acting part of her audition was very successful.

I asked her about her reaction to reviewing the casting list. Hannah said she was very happy and excited to get started. She is also enthusiastic about working with Avelana who is playing Dorothy in the first half of the musical. Hannah also said that everyone who auditioned deserved a role.

I also interviewed Daisy who is also in year 9. She is playing the Witch’s Nikko and is part of the Oz chorus. I asked Daisy why she wanted a be a part of it. She said she thought it seemed really fun when her friends did it and was sad she missed out on such an amazing experience.

Daisy was confused at first about what role she was actually playing but felt excited to get started. She was very eager to be a part of it. Daisy also told me that the rehearsal schedule was a bit annoying but that didn’t matter she just wanted to be a part of it.
Finally I talked to Isla, another year 9 student. She is playing a lead dancer.

Isla was worried when she found out she had to sing for the auditions because she had played the main role of Violet Beauregard in last year’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory without needing too much solo singing. Therefore, upon finding out dance was an option, Isla who dances outside of school was very excited and hoped she would get it.

She thought her audition went really well but told me she had messed up a few times. However, overall Isla gave it her best shot. She was really happy when she had got the role she wanted.
