The coaching programme has been instrumental in the Club’s rise to playing in the Sussex Premier Cricket League. This winter one of those former colts has taken an opportunity to develop his cricket skills by playing in Australia. He is playing for Port Melbourne Cricket Club. Harry Smeed’s trip to Australia has started very strongly, playing for Port Melbourne 1st eleven in two-day games carried over two weekends. Harry has completed 3 games: one win, one loss and a rained off second day meaning the game ended in a draw. Harry has taken 13 wickets in the three games although only bowling in two of them, with two 5-wicket hauls. He has also had a score of 40 in his first match and recently, batting at number 3, scored 21 as Port Melbourne registered their second win of the season, thanks to a fine performance by Smeed. It has also given him the opportunity to catch up with some old friends notably with Sandun Dias a previous overseas player for Rye Cricket Club who played four seasons here, and he too  is playing in Melbourne this winter. The change in culture and weather has been a great experience so far. Living close to the city and experiencing everything Melbourne has to offer, Smeed is hoping to keep his fine performances rolling in and we look forward to his return for the start of the new season in April.
