After the spill of bio-beads from Southern Water’s Eastbourne water treatment plant in November 2025, which resulted in millions washing ashore at Camber Sands and Rye Harbour Nature Reserve, Southern Water has agreed to pay compensation.
A Southern Water spokesman said, “Since the accidental release of bio-beads, we’ve continued to work closely with local partners, including Rother District Council, to support and fund the clean-up along the coast.
“We recognise that the beads caused real concern to local residents, businesses and visitors to the area. We’ve already made goodwill payments to some businesses and provided some emergency grants.
“We’re going further – and we’ve created a significant goodwill fund. Right now, we’re consulting with local stakeholders and working with them to decide on how the money will be used.”
Local MP, Helena Dollimore, who called for compensation from Southern Water, has organised two events for local people to have their say in how the money should be spent. There will be a meeting on Saturday 5 September in Rye and Sunday 6 September in Camber.
