The Rye and District Country Show returned to Elm Tree Farm in Icklesham for another fun-filled day of country life, entertainment and community spirit, all in support of St Michael’s Hospice on Saturday 22 August.
A firm favourite in the local calendar, the show offers an affordable family day out with something for almost everyone. Cars, dogs and horses all had their moment in the spotlight, alongside tractors, agricultural displays and a wide variety of trade stands.
The day got off to a suitably noisy and energetic start with Ryebellion Drummers, whose unmistakable sound soon had everyone’s attention and set the scene for the day ahead. Music and displays continued throughout the day, entertaining the crowds around the showground.
There was plenty to see wherever you looked, from impressive vehicles and machinery to four-legged competitors, local exhibitors and stalls offering an array of goods and produce. It was very much a traditional country show, with the relaxed, friendly atmosphere that has helped make the event so popular with people from Rye, Icklesham and the surrounding villages.
But behind all the fun is a very important purpose. Profits from the Rye and District Country Show are donated to St Michael’s Hospice, which provides care and support for people with life-limiting illnesses and their families across Hastings and Rother.
The show is organised each year by a dedicated committee who give their time and energy to making the event happen. Their hard work not only provides a great day out for the community but also raises vital funds to help the hospice continue its work.
Mike Boyd, chair of the organising committee said, “There are so many people to thank for making Saturday such a special day. A huge thank you must go to the owners of the fields we use, Philip and Corrine Merricks and Kit and Janet McLean. Without your generosity and continued support, the show simply couldn’t happen.
“Our thanks also go to the wonderful volunteers who give so much of their time, both in the preparations beforehand and throughout the day; to all our stallholders; and to everyone involved in organising the dog and horse shows. and other events and all the musicians who entertained the crowds during the day.
“There are far too many people to name individually, but to everyone who played a part in making the day such a success, please take a well-deserved round of applause from all of us on the committee. We simply couldn’t do it without you.”
