Last Saturday 22 August, in a match sponsored by My Sweet Old Etcetera, Rye 1sts defeated Rottingdean 1sts by 71 runs, a convincing win that put a halt to a recent run of defeats that had seen Rye slip down the table.
On another warm sunny afternoon skipper Harry Smeed won the toss and elected to field. The opening pair of James Hamilton 55 and Ruben Collingwood 79 shared a 133 run partnership to set up the Rye innings. Cornel Swart with 57 kept the momentum going as Cornel reached 714 runs for the season. With help from a quickfire 20 from Harry Smeed, Rye reached 262-6 off 45 overs.
Rottingdean, in reply, never got going as Craig Pierce took a wicket in the first over. Rottingdean stumbled to 72-4 as James Smeed took 3-30. Henry Ledden made 59 and Mohammad R-Mushtaq-Islam 38, but Ben Clifton 3-18 wrapped up the win as Rottingdean were dismissed for 191 off 45 overs.
This Saturday the 1sts travel to Buxted Park and the 2nds host Crowborough 1sts in a match sponsored by The Mermaid Inn.
