September is always the time for reflection in the cricket season. Rye Cricket Club started that reflection on Saturday evening 5 September with the Junior awards evening.
This season 70 young people were involved with the Junior section aged 5-16. The Under 16s finished 2nd in the Ashford and District B League. The theme of the year was that our age profile saw many of our teams fielding under age players.
The presentation was made by Stephen Jempson. Stephen and the Jempson family have provided an award, the George Jempson Spirit of Cricket Award, in memory of their late son.
The award recognises an individual who has the spirit of cricket. “The spirit of cricket is a principle that embodies fair play, respect, and integrity in the game. While cricket has its formal laws, the spirit emphasizes behaving honorably, showing respect towards opponents, teammates, and officials, and taking responsibility for one’s actions on the field.”
The award was made to Alex Welch who thoroughly embodies the spirit of cricket.

Charlie Cooke’s batting achievements were impressive. He was 2nd highest run scorer in the U13 League and won the Under 16 Batting Award, with Bertie Furnival 2nd in the U16 Batting Award.
The Junior section starts the autumn net session on Friday 9 October at Rye Sports Centre. There is a softball session from 4.00pm to 5.00pm for 5-9 year olds costing £30. The hardball session for for 9-14 year olds is from 5.00pm to 6.00pm costing £50.

The adult cricket season has been difficult. The 1st Xl finished 8th in Division 3 East after losing to Cuckfield 2nds on Saturday 5 September. Rye were dismissed for 108 and Cuckfield won by 6 wickets.
The 2nd Xl finished and were relegated from Division 7 and the 3rd Xl was unable to complete the season. The problem has been poor availability. The 2nd Xl used 34 players over 13 matches. Players have been on holiday, work, family events, early harvest, illness, injury, the list goes on.
