A 157 mile trek for charity

Eighty-two-year-old Jim Thompson, from Fairlight, will be taking on a new, and possibly one of his most severe, challenges yet.

Jim will be making a 157-mile solo trek in the Outer Hebrides in the hope of raising some much-needed cash for the British Heart Foundation.

He will be starting his adventure on May 30 with a 500-mile train journey to Oban.

A 5-hour ferry trip will take him to Barra, followed by a quick bus journey to Vatersay – the southernmost of the Outer Hebrides Islands.

Armed with a map and a good pair of walking boots, Jim will start his trek, heading northwards for the next 11 days.

Walking solo across the ten Hebridean Isles, Jim’s original plan was to camp each night in his tiny tent, but thanks to an amazing response from the islanders, he has now been offered overnight stays by the very kind and generous locals. Jim is delighted that he can now leave his tent at home!

With a bit of luck and some kind weather, he plans to finish in Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis, just in time for another ferry to take him back to the mainland.

You can follow his progress on Facebook (What’s Going On In Fairlight)

also on Jim’s JustGiving page where daily updates will be made once he starts his trek.
