Hitting the note in Rye Harbour

On Sunday evening, May 21, the Church of the Holy Spirit in Rye Harbour had evening prayers led by Linda Estrada. Each month, a theme is chosen with the aim of getting more people from the village involved in the service and the church.

This month, May’s theme was Pentecost which is very apt as the church is dedicated to the Holy Spirit. FourScore, a newly formedquartet regaled the congregation with sublime music.

Martin Bruce explains: “For those wanting to make music, singing is brilliant. You do not need to buy your instrument or to carry it from place to place; your vocal cords are already there, ready and waiting for whenever you wish to use them. You can choose to sing on your own, in the shower for example, or with a choir of twenty others, or even with a chorus of two hundred. Above all, even for professionals, singing is fun and it is that spirit of enjoyment that lies behind the creation of FourScore, a new vocal quartet in the Rye area. The group gave its first public performance in Rye Harbour church with two pieces suitable for Pentecost: Tallis’ ‘Oh Lord, give thy Holy Spirit’ and ‘Loquebantur variis linguis’ by Palestrina. We hope to return to the Harbour in future, to find other churches where we can sing and to provide music for local weddings, funerals and other occasions.”

Linda Estrada said the music was uplifting and she hopes that they will come back later in the year. A member of the congregation who lives in the Harbour came and congratulated the quartet and with tears in her eyes she said: “The Alleluia was so moving it is still resonating in my mind. I am so moved by your singing, thank you.”
