Matthew Burrows, local artist and founder of the globally successful Artist Support Pledge, turns the spotlight closer to home on Rye’s creative community, with his curation of the first group exhibition in the newly restored Rye Creative Centre. Bringing together the work of the studio holders of Rye Creative Centre, MARGINS will be a selling show presenting over 100 works from printmaking and sculpture to painting, photography and textiles. Burrows, who received an MBE in 2020 for services to the arts during the pandemic said: “I am delighted to have been given the opportunity to curate the studio summer show … It is my hope that by my encouragement in looking beyond the page and into the margins of RCC, I will help illuminate the rich diversity of artists living and working in and around Rye.”

Rye Creative Centre is a studio facility and cultural hub, home to over 35 artists and creative practitioners. Once the site of the Freda Gardham school, the centre now provides a much sought-after studio resource within East Sussex for artists from across the visual and performance spectrum to develop, design and make new work alongside a programme of performances, events and workshops for the local and wider community.

The brand-new auditorium at Rye Creative Centre (named the ‘Old Gym’ as a nod to its former use) has recently undergone a transformation into a light, modern, well-equipped and highly versatile performance and exhibition space. Since the opening of this performance wing, Rye Creative Centre has played host to a series of live concerts with Hastings International Piano and Oxford Lieder and will continue its event offering with a programme including partnerships with Rye Arts Festival and the development of Rye Music Centre with the Bridgepoint Ensemble.
