Waste food collection begins

Food waste is starting to be collected in Rye after months of planning.

Grey containers with an orange lid, along with a smaller food caddy and a roll of compostable liners, have been distributed across the area.

“All households will get one caddy for inside the home to empty your food scraps into,” said a spokesperson for Rother District Council. “Plus a larger outdoor bin for emptying into once the caddy is full – this is what will be collected on a weekly basis. All uneaten food and plate scrapings can go into the bins and will be collected by Biffa, the council’s waste management service each week.”

The council is warning that collections may take place on a different day to normal rubbish and recycling collections.

It also says only food in compostable liners in the food containers will be collected.
