The new Dial-a-Ride Community Bus was brought to St Mary’s churchyard on Sunday May 26. In the presence of sponsors, donors and friends, Canon David Frost pronounced a blessing on the bus and all who ride in it.
The bus was resplendent in its new livery, decorated on the back with supporters’ names, including The George in Rye, Playden WI and the Rotary Club, and also the words: “1999-2019 – This bus is dedicated to the thousands of passengers who have used Dial-a-Ride over the past 20 years.”
Supporters of the service were also acknowledged on the side of the vehicle: Rye Town Council, Icklesham Parish Council, Rye and District Hospital, Rye Community Shop and East Sussex County Council.
The bus had been purchased second hand, with 50,000 miles on the clock for about £8,000. Configured for ease of use, It incorporates a rear tail-lift to help those with mobility problems.
Earlier that morning, the ladies of Playden WI opened a stall in the Buttermarket to help raise funds.
