Camber Sands Drownings

At long last a date has been set for a preliminary inquest at the Hastings Coroners Court on five of the seven deaths at Camber Sands last summer. This is due to take place on March 15 and is marked down as a ‘pre-inquest review’. The police are continuing to appeal for witnesses to the incident. Rother District Council has now agreed to fund an RNLI lifeguard service on Camber Sands for the holiday season this summer.

Police drugs charge

On an entirely separate matter, hotelier Iftikhar Javed Khan, 48, of High Street, Rye, has been summonsed to appear before Hastings magistrates on Wednesday, March 15 to face a charge of producing a quantity of cannabis, a Class B controlled drug, between 17 August 2014 and 8 July 2016.

He is also to face a charge that on 8 July 2016 he had in his possession a quantity of cannabis with intent to supply.

He had previously been released without charge when he answered bail in November. He has since been summonsed as above and is due to appear at 2pm on 15 March. Source: Sussex Police
