The former Gandhi Restaurant in Cinque Ports Street will shortly be re-opening under new management.
Mr Karim, owner of the Mahdi Spice also in Cinque Ports Street, has acquired the lease to these larger premises, which can accommodate 72 diners at a sitting as compared with the 38 covers at the Mahdi Spice. Sharing a hospitable cup of tea, he told me that he had been planning to extend the Mahdi Spice, but when the opportunity to acquire the additional premises came up, he jumped at it as an excellent business proposition. Mr Karim started his catering business in Tenterden in 1986 and opened in Rye in 2002.
The present business will continue to be run by Mr Karim’s eldest son Abdul Jakaria. The menu at the two restaurants will be somewhat different, with new dishes introduced based on traditional Bangladeshi/Indian cuisine.
