Consultation has reopened on the Rye Neighbourhood Plan. Representations can be made to Rye Town Council until Thursday 9 July.
Following new advice from Rother District Council planning officers on both housing numbers and the Plan’s timescales, Rye Town Council agreed to further changes to the July 2025 update at its meeting on 11 May. The planners also advised that further consultation was necessary. The Rye Neighbourhood Plan came into force in 2019 and sets out where development can take place in the town.
As part of the ongoing discussion between the two councils it was agreed the Plan could be extended to run until 2031 as long as the new housing target was agreed. Currently 325 homes will need to be built in Rye.
Anthony Kimber, Rye Neighbourhood Plan co-ordinator said, “The higher target numbers for Rye had been subject to the consultation (closed in March 2026) by Rother District Council, as they had replicated the Rye housing allocation in their emerging draft development strategy. Copies of representations to that process are linked, so if you have already made representation to the Rother consultation those points will be considered at the end of the Rye consultation.
In April Rye News reported on the lengthy discussions that have been taking place, with Rye Town Council expressing frustration on the process and the housing targets. The Rye Neighbourhood Plan is expected to be ion the agenda for the town council’s planning committee on Monday 8 June.
