Here’s a round up of some of the other stories making the news in and around Rye this week.
Rope Walk store victim of shoplifters
Shoplifters stole over £300 worth of clothes from a store in the Rope Walk arcade in Rye on Thursday, November 23. A woman in her thirties, a teenage boy and girl, and two younger children entered the Flirty Girl shop at 3:05 pm, and whilst the shopkeeper was distracted by the older women, the two teenage children selected items from a rail and took them to a waiting car.
Several Juicy Couture tracksuits were stolen, along with a vintage corset and a Lyle & Scott baseball cap. Pictures from the arcade’s CCTV have been uploaded to the store’s Facebook page. Anyone with any information is asked to call Sussex Police quoting reference 1266 25/11.
Rye Bonfire night assault
Investigations are continuing after two people were assaulted in Rye on Saturday, November 11 at about 10pm. The two victims were waiting in a queue for a bus in the town centre after the bonfire celebrations when the attack took place. Whilst helping another passenger with a pushchair, a man was hit by a bottle thrown by someone in a group of 12 to 15-year-olds. He received a cut to his head. The other person was hit by the same bottle but was uninjured.

Money for transport schemes
Two local projects find out if they have secured thousands of pounds worth of funding next week. Bus stop improvement work in Winchelsea Beach and new bollards in Pett will be discussed by East Sussex County Council on Monday, December 11.
The project in Winchelsea Beach is for a new bus stop on Sea Road, with better access, a new flag, timetable and bin. These works are expected to cost £23,000, with ESCC and Icklesham Parish Council each providing £11,500.
In Pett, the money is needed to install 13 bollards along a verge in the village to help improve accessibility and visibility along a popular walking route. This project is expected to cost £3,860 in total, with Pett Parish Council providing half this sum.
Water problems for one day
As Rye News went to press last week, news was coming in of more water problems affecting a large part of the town and surrounding area. Unlike in September, the cuts to supply and low pressure in Camber, East Guldeford and Rye were repaired within a day. 750 homes and businesses were affected.
A spokesperson for Southern Water said: “We are very sorry about the disruption caused to customers due to a burst water main last week underneath Monk Bretton Bridge. We had a fleet of water tankers supporting the network and delivered bottled water to customers. We also set up a bottled water station at Western Road car park at New Lydd Road in Camber. The issue was resolved on Friday December 1.”
Rye Town Council meet for the last time in 2023
There’s a full meeting of Rye Town Council, and the Planning and Townscape Committee, on Monday, December 11 at 6.30pm. Items on the agenda include: who will be Rye’s mayor for 2024/25, the use of council reserves, the clean up after Rye Bonfire, Rye Leisure Centre, and future planning developments. Panto tickets on sale
Rye Players’ annual pantomime is open for booking, raising funds for Rye Foodbank. The local community theatre group is performing Robin Hood and The Babes in The Wood at these local venues in the run up to Christmas:
