Rye is the only parish council battleground within our “circulation area”. In Rye, 17 candidates are competing for one of the 16 places on the town council. Some well known faces will be absent from the town hall after the May 7 elections, chief among them Granville Bantick.

Four women councillors have announced that they are standing down in Rye: Mary Smith, who has been a frequent writer of opinion features for Rye News, Gemma Blumire, Heidi Foster and Sonia Holmes. Others to stand down are Mike Eve, Nigel Jennings and Adam Smith.

There are no elections here because it has no parish council. Instead it has a parish meeting – ie, it must assemble annually on some day between March 1 and June 1 and on one other occasion during the year. The meetings are open to the public but only registered electors for the parish are permitted to speak and vote on a proposal.
