Former Mayor Jonathan Breeds has been re-elected to Rye Town Council following a by-election on Thursday 18 December.
Five candidates stood for just one vacant seat following the death of long standing councillor and former Rye Mayor Jo Kirkham.
The results were announced on Friday morning. 692 ballot papers were issued from an electorate of 3461 – a 20% turn out

Congratulations to Jonathan Breeds, it’s good to see him return to the Council. We know him to be fair minded and proactive. And well done for standing to the other candidates. It’s been encouraging to see so much interest in the by-election. Hopefully the uncontested election from May 2023 is just a blip, it’s always healthier in a democracy to allow residents to vote, but it needs enough candidates too. Thank you to everyone who voted for me, I am very grateful. Next time, maybe!
