Rye Town FC hosted second-placed placed Battle Baptists on Saturday February 16 during the spring-like Valentine weekend, however, there wasn’t much love in the air at Rye Rugby club as the two sides competed for three precious league points.

Rye Town’s man of the match Tom Coombs

A solitary goal scored in the 18th minute gave Battle Baptists a slender lead at the half-time interval. In an amazing second half four goals were scored within four minutes of each other.  Town equalised in the 54th with a goal from George Ball, a minute later Battle restored their lead, before Town pegged them back to two apiece in the 56th through Tom Coombs.  Two minutes later Battle hit a third goal, but on this occasion Town could not find a reply and with a strike in the 72nd minute Battle Baptists ran out 4-2 winners. Town’s Rye Heating man of the match award went to Tom Coombs; the match sponsors were Tom Jebb Decorating Services.

The win took Battle Baptists back to the top of the league table on goal difference from Bexhill Town. Rye Town dropped a place and find themselves sixth in the table behind Sedlescombe Rangers.

This weekend Saturday February 23 Town entertain Bexhill Utd II at Rye Rugby club in the quarter final of the Robertsbridge Intermediate Cup. Kick off is at 1:30pm and the match will be sponsored by The Mermaid Inn, Rye.
