Was ever Palm Sunday like this?

There would have been no procession, no cheering crowds in lock-down Jerusalem, just a lonely figure on the way to execution at the end of a turbulent week. What use were the crowds anyway, a fickle lot, as keen to pass judgement as to praise?

That week seemed to last an age – we couldn’t get enough of the man, his gentle wisdom for friends and a biting at the heels of the establishment. We cheered him on but we knew the end would be sudden and brutal. It had to be.

Still, we would listen again – that voice would live on for those that have ears to hear. No sadness about it, he seemed to make things real, convinced that things had to change. He spoke to our condition all right, said that it was us that had to make it happen, not for ourselves, not even just for future generations. It’s the here and now that’s connected, backwards and forwards through time.

We’ll raise a cheer to that.
