The Easter Vigil at St Mary’s East Guldeford took place on Easter Saturday, April 4 at dusk. Considered the first service of Easter and the “Passover of the Lord”, the Easter Vigil is a profound service held after sunset on Holy Saturday or before dawn on Easter Sunday, marking the transition from the darkness of the tomb to the joy of the resurrection.

Annie and Richard Baker are the church wardens of St Mary’s and work tirelessly throughout the year creating services that are special. The church of St Mary’s had been beautifully dressed in Easter flower arrangements created by Annie while her husband Richard had bedecked the church in candles which were lit during the service.

This created a warm and reflective atmosphere and the congregation was led through prayer and music to rejoice that on Easter Sunday their Saviour would rise again from the dead.

The liturgy began outside the church as dusk fell, where a new fire was kindled and blessed. From this fire, the Paschal Candle was lit, representing the light of Christ rising in glory. This candle was then carried into the church, with the worshippers lighting their own candles from it, illuminating the sanctuary. As the flame was shared the church filled with light representing the triumph of life over death. The plainsong Exultet, sung by Martin Bruce, rang through the building, reflecting the joy of resurrection and the Christian hope of salvation. Music was an important part of the service and was provided by local quartet, FourScore.

Reverend Jacques Desrosiers

Reverend Jacques Desrosiers led the service with Reverend Paul White, Rector of St Mary’s Rye and Reverend Michael Georgiou taking part. The sermon was delivered by Tina Beattie, Professor Emeritus of Catholic Studies at the University of Roehampton.
