Midsummer art class

An invitation is offered to local creative folk to spend the midsummer weekend sketching in a two-acre wild garden at Winchelsea Beach. The two-day course is being held on Saturday and Sunday, June 22 and 23, from 10am to 2:30pm and costs £100 including a picnic lunch and art materials.

Monthly art lessons at the former Gopsall Pottery, run by local artist Anna Wilson-Patterson, are now expanding to include weekends. Each day starts by looking at the sketchbooks of three contemporary artists, before a demonstration of technique using inks and acrylics. Then the students can pick a field, barn or shed to site themselves to study the natural forms around them.

The gardens contain several outbuildings, sculptural pergolas, a vegetable garden and fields bursting with oxeye daisies, fennel and comfrey. Students come together for a sociable lunch before embarking on larger works during the afternoon. The day ends with a review of all the pieces created and feedback.
