A donation to Rye Cricket Club in honour of a former player will help the team maintain the Salts. The club has purchased a new machine to mark the boundary and pitch.
Sadly last year Derek Baldock passed away. He was known locally in recent years as a landlord in Rye, but prior to that Derek, who’s nickname was Longun, was a keen sportsman playing cricket for Rye and football for Rye United. There is a picture in the cricket pavilion of Derek from 1965.
His family have set up a fund in his name to donate to good causes. They heard about the cricket club’s need to acquire funds to look after the cricket Salts. So they very generously donated funds so a line marker could be purchased.
On Friday, April 25 the new kit was christened “Longun’s liner” and presented to the club by Derek’s family members, Chris, Kay and Michelle.
The club is very grateful for the gift and will ensure it gets put to good use on the cricket Salts.

It was good to see the family of the late Longun baldocks contributing to the upkeep of the football and cricket Salts, which he graced for many years.Along with Peter Mathew’s it will be a longtime before we see players of their outstanding ability again down there, and they were Ryers aswell.
