On 19 August, Hythe was transformed into a spectacle of colour, light and tradition for its much-loved Venetian Fete. Among those enjoying the celebrations were the mayors of the Cinque Ports, joined by the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, Admiral Sir George Zambellas and his wife Lady Amanda, for an evening that brought together civic tradition and community spirit against the beautiful backdrop of the Royal Military Canal.
The Hythe Venetian Fete is a unique and much-loved tradition in the historic town of Hythe, Kent. Dating back to the 1860s, this spectacular event has its origins in the Victorian era, when local residents first decorated boats and floated them along the Royal Military Canal to celebrate community spirit and creativity. Over the decades, the Fete has grown into a biennial highlight, renowned for its illuminated floats, vibrant costumes and festive atmosphere, drawing visitors from across the region and beyond. Run by volunteers and only financed by grant funding and ticket sales, this is a major event celebrating Hythe.
Councillor Chris Hoggart, The Right Worshipful Mayor of Rye, represented Rye at the Fete. “It was a brilliant evening and so wonderful to see the community coming together to showcase the different clubs and groups that make Hythe so special. Kathy and I had a great evening and wish to thank Councillor Pauline Cullen, Mayor of Hythe, and all the organising team who created this wonderful event.”
