Rye town map challenge

David Faulkner was sitting at Plovdiv airport, in Bulgaria, waiting to return home to the UK. He had been filming with a crew in Bulgaria and sat chatting to one of the cameramen as they waited to board. Rye came up in conversation and both men found that they had connections to the town, which just shows that the statement “We are only six steps away from everyone else” is often true. The statement refers to the theory of “six degrees of separation”, which suggests that no two people on Earth are more than six acquaintances away from each other. This means that through a chain of “friend of a friend” connections, many people can be linked to any other person in the world.

The two men boarded the plane and took their seats. David heard his name called out so he turned around. The cameraman had opened his book to read and his bookmark was the Rye town map crafted so cleverly by Olly Campion and there he was holding it up. David took a photo which he sent to Olly who posted it on social media. I hate the phrase “It went viral!” but in this case it did. So far it has had over two million views and has been shared a great deal too. It is crazy that this all came from one small conversation at the airport.

Also on the social media post there is a photo showing the map taken in Odessa, Ukraine.

Olly would like to set you a challenge: how far away can you take the map? It can’t be posted, so no cheating. Take a photograph of yourself with the map with reference to where you are in the photo, for instance at the Eiffel Tower, and send to ktbaspect@gmail.com and we will publish a selection in Rye News.
