Sand, sea and great coffee

Rye News is supporting local businesses in Camber after a very tough start to the year. This week, some good news at the new Welcome Centre as an impressive new cafe opens.

A new independent coffee shop, Leo’s, opened at The Welcome Centre in Camber’s central car park on Valentine’s Day 14 February, bringing high-quality coffee and local flavour to the heart of Camber Sands.

Founded by Nancy and Jon Newman-Oller, who recently moved from London, Leo’s is named after their young son and represents the couple’s dream of creating a warm, community-focused space by the sea. Jon, who has hospitality experience and a passion for coffee, runs the shop full time, while Nancy oversees operations and business development.

Speciality coffee is the cornerstone of the Leo’s experience, made with beans from Origin Coffee — an award-winning roaster from Cornwall known for its ethical sourcing. Non-coffee drinkers can enjoy hot chocolate, tea, matcha or a soft drink along with a tempting range of fresh pastries —the salted caramel brownie is already a customer favourite.

Young visitors at Camber

Sustainability and local collaboration are central to Leo’s ethos. Milk is supplied by Northiam Dairy, and other ingredients are locally sourced wherever possible. All takeaway cups are fully compostable, and customers are encouraged to return used ones for a discount — a simple way to help keep the beach litter-free.

In the off-season, when dogs are allowed on this part of the beach, Leo’s welcomes furry visitors too, with fresh water and biscuits for good behaviour. The couple have introduced a Dog Wall of Fame, where they take polaroid pics of their dog visitors to showcase proudly on their wall.

Jon explains their vision: “We want Leo’s to feel welcoming to locals all year round, not just something for visitors during peak season.” Leo’s is primarily a takeaway service – there are some benches outside for those who wish to sit, have a refreshment and rest their legs.

The new Camber Welcome Centre

Proudly independent, community-minded and sustainability-driven, Leo’s invites everyone to enjoy great coffee, friendly service, and a true taste of local spirit — because the best beach walk starts with the best brew, and a new wave of flavour.
