On Saturday, July 1 and Sunday, July 2 at the St Mary’s Centre in Lion Street there will be an exhibition by four artists. The artists involved are co-hosts Noel and Peter East-Hall, Lorraine Mailer and Molly Newton. All four will be there to talk to visitors about their works, which are for sale.
Noel, who recently had an open studio in stunning Dungeness, likes to paint from the heart and the mind. He is self-taught and likes his work to express part of himself, especially when his anxieties overtake. His paintings depict images that are not fully formed to represent how he feels. Noel likes to paint abstract faces and unformed figures as well as land and seascapes which are inspired by his home in Lydd-on-Sea.
Peter is an art photographer, a member of the Ashford Visual Artists and the Society of Photographers. He likes to capture images that one would not normally look at in its usual setting. He takes inspiration from nature as well as inanimate and obscure objects and portraits. Peter has been interested in photography since he was a child. This will be his third exhibition and he will be showing photographs of Rye and its surrounding areas as well as some creative shots that spike the imagination.
Molly says: “Using a restrictive palette of black and white, my work challenges our perception, through shades of grey, to the diversity and reality of who we really are.” Throughout her school and university life, Molly has always had an interest and focus on the human form and identity. Now she paints at home in her studio, still exploring these recurring themes to create a mixture of ‘human landscapes and distorted portraits’.
Lorraine says: “Through a labour-intensive repetitive process, I am trying to find a connectivity to our past, in an attempt to unravel an inherent inability to comprehend the consequences of our action. It permeates in our culture, a compliance, double standards and unwillingness to take responsibility.” Lorraine creates installations / sculptures and photographic works through fragile, seemingly inconsequential, transparent or reflective materials, sourced from everyday disposable products, often plastics.
