Professional international wildlife photographer David Plummer headed up a group of Sussex Wildlife Trust judges to judge more than 600 entries for its online photographic competition. Their job was to choose just twelve finalists. The public, 750 of them, were then voting for their favourite.

How to make this decision was tough because the standard was so high.

The winner was Brian Watkins of Haywards Heath with his image called Banded Demoiselle Silhouette.

The image was taken one evening when Brian had been photographing a wild barn owl and was packing up his kit at the end of the session. It turned out to be a lucky chance encounter. He noticed the banded demoiselle roosting on a piece of grass. The setting sun was a perfect backdrop and the silhouette worked perfectly.

Congratulations to Brian for such an amazing shot. So much of good photography is in the moment; seconds later this shot would have been lost.
