The public’s view

The Tuesday Painters Club of Rye closed its summer exhibition and sale of art on a high on Saturday, August 16. Rye had been buzzing all week long, the rain stayed away and the mood was buoyant. The last day was busy. If a cash register were used, it would have been ka-ching all day long.

Throughout the week, visitors were invited to choose their favourite painting. Almost 1,000 votes were cast. Since we clicked in close to 2,000 visitors, that’s a great result – with lots of lovely comments to add icing to the cake.

Here are the rest of the public’s top five. They do love a local scene!

Joint 2nd Hey You by Kerry Bennett
Joint 2nd – joint 2nd Early Morning Study by Jim Hyett
4th Busy Fishing Beach Rock a Nore, Hastings by Mike Funnell
5th Rye in the Sky by Elaine Baker

Elaine’s picture was also the winner of the club’s competition to choose a painting to feature in and on all its publicity and promotional material.

In case anyone is interested in the statistics, 38 members submitted 139 paintings and 48 were sold, that’s over a third which is actually very, very good! We are not a big club: 65 members strong, so nearly two thirds contributed to the exhibition.

Felicity Pike and Richard Adams

Felicity Pike, chair, and the committee have to thank Richard Adams, our philanthropic vice-president and acclaimed Rye artist, for the generous raffle donation of one of his original pastel paintings, ‘The Mudlarks’. He’s seen here drawing the winning ticket at the close of the exhibition. It’s just waiting now to go to its new home in Oxford. Congratulations to the purchaser of ticket number 450!

Massive thanks, too, to our exhibition coordinator, Elizabeth Kimber, and her amazing Tuesday Painters team for organising, managing and – yes! – coordinating the whole event with the support of the committee.
