The challenges of journalism

Rye News is pleased to be sponsoring a talk by award winning investigative journalist, Nick Davies, at this year’s Rye Arts Festival. During his 40 year career, Nick Davies has systematically exposed abuses of power by individuals, corporations and governments.

He will discuss the general public’s trust in journalism today and its complex relationship with truth in an era of fake news. From phone hacking to social media and misinformation, he will explore the consequences of a lack of trust and the implications for democracy.

Rye News has been providing local news for the community for eight years and has, in a small way, experienced many of the challenges that will be discussed. Unlike national papers with a particular political slant, Rye News is run by a team of volunteers with different skills and views and the team works hard to deliver accurate stories which provide political balance and address local issues as well supporting businesses in a tourist town.

We anticipate that the talk will be followed by a lively debate. Come along and join in that debate.

The event will run on September 14 at 4:30pm and tickets are available now from the Rye Arts Festival Box Office.
