On the hottest day of the year, Saturday June 21, so far all three Saturday League teams lost the toss, and spent the afternoon in the field. The 1sts, in a match sponsored by My Sweet Old Etcetera, hosted Lindfield 1sts who took full advantage of a good pitch and a fast outfield to post 245-5 off 45 overs. Imesh Udayanga top scored with 61 and Billy Buckingham 51 not out, ensured Rye endured a difficult session. It showed in the batting as Rye failed to threaten the target as they succumbed to 174 all out in just 33 overs. Five of the top order made it into the twenties, but failed to make a match winning score. Despite the defeat Rye are fourth in Division 3 East as the halfway point of the season approaches. Next week Rye 1sts travel to play Crowhurst Park 1sts.
The 2nds also bowled first, but generous cloud cover made fielding more bearable. All season the 2nds have bowled well, and on Saturday Crowborough also had no answer to the attack. 17-year-old James Archer took 3-20 and two good catches. Ross Pierce applied a stranglehold with 1-6 off his 8 overs, George Channon 2-49 and Martin Blincow 3-29 saw Crowborough dismissed for 149 in the 40th over. Rye came out flying scoring 63 in the first 10 overs. Although wickets were lost, opener Paul Hitchcott carried his bat for 78 not out as Rye 2nds won in the 33rd over by 5 wickets. The 2nds sit 3rd in Division 7 East. Next week they host Firle in a match sponsored by The Mermaid Inn.
The 3rds lost to Little Common by 40 runs. Little Common scored 179 all out built around Will Thwaites scoring 86. Only 2 others made double figures. Impressive with the ball were the 15-year-olds Basti Bowley 4-25 and Lexy Tuddenham 3-57. However Rye faded when batting. 17-year-old Sam Bradnum with 44 continued his fine form, but only 17-year-old Theo Burton 20 offered support. Rye were all out for 139. Next Saturday the 3rds are away to Robertsbridge 4ths.
