As the weather warnings and storm clouds loomed last Saturday, June 7 it seemed the prospect of cricket play was unlikely, but the weather held off to allow all 3 games to reach a type of conclusion. The 1st Xl hosted Rottingdean 1st Xl at The Salts in a match sponsored by My Sweet Old Etcetera. Rye batted first after losing the toss. The overnight rain made batting conditions testing with movement in the air and off the wicket. Rye were pleased to achieve 182-9 off 45 overs. Luke Payton led the way with 71 supported by Ruben Collingwood with 34. Mohammad Rejoanul-Islam with 4-33 the pick of the Rottingdean bowlers.

In reply, Rottingdean struggled as well with the conditions. Craig Pierce with 3-13 off 8 overs put Rottingdean on the back foot as they slipped to 76-6. However George Ledden 33 and Mohammad Mustaq-Islam 26 offered the threat of a defeat. Luke Payton though with 3-13 saw Rottingdean dismissed for 134. A win by 48 runs for Rye. This Saturday travel to the Division Leaders Bolney who will provide a stiff test with their team of Galaticos.

The 2nds had a miserable day on Saturday. They undertook a 100-mile round trip, sat during their innings in the rain without any cover and had watched a St Peter’s 3rd batsmen Thomas Clarke hit 84 off 35 balls, mainly over the 35 yard boundary. Rye had made a good start restricting St Peters to 166-4 in the 30th over. Freddie Mackenzie 2-21 and Martin Blincow 2-41 the successful bowlers. But from that point the boundaries rained down as St Peter’s totalled 274-4 off 40 overs.

Rye 2nds kept looking at the clouds that were approaching, but good tight bowling restricted Rye. Mark Cook 30 offered resistance, and skipper Ben Clifton 39 not out off 21 balls were not enough as the rain eventually washed the game out. On Duckworth Lewis, Rye lost by 64 runs. The only real concern at that point was facing a 50-mile drive back in wet kit. This Saturday, June14 Rye 2nds host Iden 1sts in a match sponsored by The Mermaid Inn.

Rye 3rds hosted Crowhurst Park 4ths, who were bolstered by their 3rd Xl Captain who was available as their 3rd team match was off, and the signing of an Australian for this one game. Crowhurst Park batted first and scored 249-7. The Aussie scored 116 and the 3rd Xl skipper 51. 15 year old Lexy Tuddenham continued to impress taking 4-36.

In reply Rye were all out for 111 feeling very wet. This Saturday, June14 the 3rds travel to play Little Common Ramblers 4ths.

Rye’s U11A team

Thankfully Monday evening, June 9 the sun shone and the two Under 11 teams enjoyed wins. The U11A team beat Ashford Town by 15 runs. The B team beat Tenterden C by 13 runs. A good result for the B team who recorded their first win of the season as they improve and the A team made it 5 wins from 5 games.
