Rye 1sts hosted Lindfield 1sts on Saturday 8 August in a match sponsored by My Sweet Old Etcetera. It was another hot day on The Salts as the ground looked more like the veldt than an English cricket ground.
Rye lost the toss and the afternoon turned into a lot of “Hard Yakka.” Lindfield, chasing promotion, set about building a large total. Toby Stephenson hit 83 off 101 balls, then Umesh Udayanga 64 off 63 balls, then a final salvo of 23 off 18 balls by Dominic Morgan took Lindfield to 279-7 off 45 overs. Craig Pierce 3-54 and Cornel Swart 2-48 the pick of the Rye bowlers.
In reply, Rye faltered. Rye were dismissed for just 144. Skipper Harry Smeed hit 46 off 50 balls, but found no joy elsewhere, as only two other batsmen reached double figures.
Next Saturday Rye travel to play Hailsham.
Rye 2nds travelled to play Battle 1sts. Rye lost the toss for the 7th game in a row and found themselves on the Seregenti, as there was not a blade of green grass on the small Battle ground.
Battle made the most of the small boundaries as Guy Ballard hit 91 as Battle raced to 144 in just 10 overs. Skipper Martin Blincow removed Guy Ballard and in so doing recorded his 700th victim since 2008 when scoring started on line. Along with Ross Pierce they pulled back the Battle attack, as Blincow finished with 1-31 off 8 overs. David Jempson chipped in with 2-45 as Rye restricted Battle to 288-4.
Rye’s reply threatened calamity as they slipped to 52-4, but for the second time in the game Rye pulled themselves back into contention. Riley McCarthy hit his maiden 50, with 58 and shared a 94 run partnership with David Jempson 49. The baton was then picked up by Ross Pierce 35 and James Archer 30 and Martin Blincow 16 Not Out. Rye however fell 37 runs short in the 37th over. A good game played in the right spirit.

Sussex Cricket Foundation’s Summer Holiday Camps return this August, giving children across the county the chance to play cricket, learn new skills and stay active during the school holidays.
Open to boys and girls aged 7 to 12 of all abilities, each camp is delivered by qualified Sussex Cricket Foundation coaches in a safe and inclusive environment. Sessions focus on batting, bowling, fielding, teamwork and confidence-building through games and coaching activities.
The Rye camp is on Wednesday 26 August 10am to 3pm
Places start from £20 plus booking fees and include a full day of cricket-based coaching, games and activities.
The camp is suitable for both beginners and young players who want to develop their game, offering a structured day of coaching while keeping the emphasis on enjoyment and fun.
