The beacon at Winchelsea also proved an ideal spot to view the eclipse, looking west out along the Brede Valley. Crowds gathered in Fairlight too, and in Rye the high sun meant some spectacular views. The moon moving in front of the sun began at about 6.15pm and just after 7pm most of it was covered creating an eerie dusk with birds falling silent. People also gathered on the beaches at Camber and Jury’s Gap.

There are roadworks which will close the A259 between Rye and Hastings overnight next week from 8pm until 5am
Monday 17 August – From Kettle O’Fish roundabout to Sea Road at Winchelsea.
Tuesday 18 August – From Sea Road to Monks Walk in Winchelsea.
Wednesday 19 August – From Monks Walk Winchelsea to Guestling Green.
Thursday 20 August – From Guestling Green to Mill Lane in Hastings.

Save Rye News
There’s another chance to meet members of the Rye News team this Saturday at the Green Waves Festival at the Tilling Green Community Centre.
Rye’s local newspaper could be forced to close unless more volunteers come forward to help secure its future. A range of roles are urgently needed, including the post of editor.
Rye News will be just one of the organisations with a stall at the show which runs from 11am-5pm. Here’s the flyer for the Green Waves Festival and there are more details about the dog show here.
Heart help
News this week of another new clinic at The Hub on Rye Hill. Specialist heart consultants started a weekly clinic on Thursday 13 August. It’s a private clinic for patients with medical insurance or self-funding.
The clinic is being run by KIMS Hospital Network, offering cardiology appointments, tests, monitoring and help with sleep apnoea.

Finally this week, a real highlight in the Rye social (and musical) calendar. The Rye Lawn Tennis Club will be hosting its annual opera concert this year at 7pm on Saturday 28 November.
Johnathan Jempson from the club said, “We are privileged once again to have Oliver Gooch as our pianist/conductor/programme arranger and he will be supported by the usual array of talent from the alumni of the Royal Opera’s Jette Parker section. We are holding it in the Assembly Room at Rye College, so there will be plenty of room and you are all welcome.”
