The fish (and a market) return

There was no fish stall last week or the week before at the Wednesday Farmers’ Market on the Strand – but it was back this Wednesday, March 8. And Friday’s Country Market at Rye Community Centre in Conduit Hill is also back (after a post-Christmas break) this week at 10am as usual.

But you need to be on time, and join the queue waiting on their seats by 10am as items such flowers tend to go very quickly!

The weather has been too rough for the Rye fishing fleet to put to sea apparently and less than a week after Rye Scallop Week, there were none to be had at Market Fisheries by the Salts. “It’s a blank state of affairs,” remarked John Botterell, the wholesale fish merchant.

One customer, who was reduced to buying Dover Sole, muttered:  “Let them eat hake.”  However the fish were back this week on Wednesday along with a number of stalls stocking local foods and plants of many kinds for the garden – which should be just about ready for some planting out. Watch out for the return of the latest information from the community garden.
