A teenager has died after getting into difficulty in the sea at Camber Sands on Sunday 9 August.
Emergency services were called to the beach at around 7pm following several reports of people struggling in the water.
Sussex Police attended the scene in what became a large search operation, along with South-East Coast Ambulance, HM Coastguard Rescue teams from Rye Bay and Romney Marsh, and the Pett Level Independent Rescue Boat. A Coastguard Search and Rescue Helicopter was also involved in the incident, along with the Kent Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance.
The 18-year-old man was brought to the beach but was pronounced dead soon after. Next of kin have been informed.
Sussex Police have confirmed there are no suspicious circumstances and the death will not be a matter for the coroner.
The two other men, a 16-year-old and a 24-year-old, were brought safely ashore. All three are thought to have travelled to Camber from London.
As the heatwave continues, Sussex Police has issued this advice about visiting the area. “Camber is very popular and often has over 20,000 visitors a day with limited car parking spaces and amenities. On these days the roads leading into Camber become congested very quickly with long waits in traffic, which means you’re more likely to be sitting in a hot car than on a hot beach. To avoid disappointment please plan your visit, or look to visit one of the many other beaches along the East Sussex coastline.”
