Post office move concerns

At the Rye Town Council Policy, Resources and General Purposes Committee on Monday January 16 the proposed move of the Rye Post Office from alongside Jempson’s to inside the store was discussed.

The siting of the Post Office in Jempson’s supermarket was raised, which is to be in the far corner as you enter where the wines and spirits are currently. This will ensure that Post Office customers have to walk round the whole store and may also do some shopping.

It is claimed that this is for security reasons though, at the Peasmarsh branch of Jempson’s, the Post Office is sited just when you enter the store, so apparently there is no security risk there. There is a suggestion that there will be a separate entrance built, but the consultation document does not mention this.

There will also be no free parking for a visit to the Post Office, but at the Battle branch of Jempson’s there are apparently bays with 30 minutes free parking. On the day car parking charges were due to be introduced at Jempson’s cars were parking illegally outside the Post Office branch in the bay reserved for bus parking.

There is a public consultation until January 25. If you wish to participate, the link is here.
