Rye and District Bonfire Society, incorporating Ryebellion Drummers and Green
Dragon Fire Carts, held their annual general meeting on Wednesday 11 March at the
Queen’s Head pub.
Bonfire Society chairman, James Foster, oversaw proceedings in what was a well
attended meeting with members keen to get 2026 underway in readiness for
November.
A vote to increase the annual membership fee from £5 to £10 per adult was carried
forward by a substantial majority, with most members present realising that costs to
put on the bonfire have steadily risen, yet the membership fee has remained static
for at least 20 years.
Anyone who would like to join the bonfire society or who requires further information
regarding the membership fee increase can enquire via email to
membership@ryebonfire.co.uk.
It was confirmed that this year’s programme will take place on Saturday 14
November and that the costs for the firelit torch parade, bonfire, fireworks, security,
insurance and medical services will cost approximately £24,000, all of which is
paid for by fundraising events and donations. Contrary to popular belief there is no
financial assistance from local or regional councils.
Any fundraising events will be posted on social media and the bonfire society hope
that the town will once more get behind them to put on yet another amazing evening
that truly lights up Rye.

Just a reminder that there is a fête on Easter Saturday 4 April at Tilling Green Community Centre and, amongst others, Rye Bonfire Society will have a stall, with a tombola, bonfire merchandise and second hand books. Please pop along to support this great community event.
