As part of the coronation holiday weekend, Rye Rugby Club hosted the coronation 7s tournament on Sunday with teams from both men and women taking part, both local and travelling from London. They all competed for the C7s cup in the summer format of rugby, same size pitch but just seven players each side.

Tracey Smith organised the event which was a great deal of work but she thoroughly enjoyed the day: “The sun had definitely got the memo that it was summer 7s and came out to play which made for a great sideline atmosphere!”

In the men’s tournament The Tailenders (a London team with local connections) took the cup going undefeated all day although they were pushed close by the Drunken Dragons. The hosts Rye RFC walked away with the coveted wooden spoon.

“Rye have been working on bringing together women players for the last few years so it was great to see so many women out competing. With four women’s teams taking part and many of the players playing 7s for the first time there was some great rugby on display.”

Maidstone Mentals took the wooden spoon with Ashford taking third place. The final was a hotly contested one between London Bears and Cranbrook Goons. Bears took an early lead but Cranbrook clawed it back to take the lead 12-5. Two more tries from Bears’ captain Emily Stone took the score to 24-12, with Bears lifting the cup.

“A great day was had by all, a spot of sunburn and plenty of partying late into the night. The tournament was organised by Tracey Smith of @summerof7s alongside Rye RFC and unlike the coronation we are looking to keep it as an annual fixture in the Rye RFC calendar.”
