BBC South East have been focussing on the area’s museums this week as over half, more than 80, remain closed, including Rye’s Ypres Castle – in most cases because of issues around social distancing and germs.

Covid-19 precautions frequently highlight the importance of cleanliness with an emphasis on hand washing and wiping down surfaces, but many historic museum exhibits (such as a suit of armour) are hard to keep clean – as are many museums because they occupy historic buildings.

So, on Tuesday morning this week, Rye Museum’s chairman Jo Kirkham was interviewed outside the castle about the problems museums face – including the loss of revenue from visitors while many costs still have to be met.
