Margaret Hewett and her husband Sid moved to Rye from South East London, writes Margaret Holbrook. They joined the Methodist Church, where Margaret sang in the church choir and both participated in the many church activities. Margaret was also a member of Winchelsea Singers. Sadly, Sid passed away nine years ago. Margaret was a long-time member of Playden WI, where she held many posts on the committee, including that of President. She became the organiser of coach outings for WI members and friends, as well as annual cruises helping to raise much needed funds for the WI Hall.

For many years she baked cakes for the Rye Country Market (formerly WI Market), held in the Conduit Hill Community Centre on Fridays at 10am and helped on the cake stall, always smiling and willing to help. She recently celebrated her 90th birthday with her family and friends. Margaret was a lovely lady who did not suffer fools gladly and she will be sadly missed by many in the town.
