There was so much going on at Rye Pirates and Smugglers Day on Saturday 8 August, but it couldn’t take place without the support from the community, the local businesses and all the volunteers.
A huge shout out to the Marine Training Corps from Rye, Ore Village, Bexhill and those marines who were down on camp from Derby and Yorkshire who did a sterling job of marshalling and generally being helpful throughout the day.
The organisers Zoe, Matt and Gary said, “We are incredibly thankful to you all, we couldn’t have done it without you and all the other people who volunteered as well.”
If you spend some time with the Marine Corps, you will soon learn that they are focussed, dedicated, polite and extremely willing to help their local communities. They put on a display on The Salts to showcase their skills.
Director of the Marine Training Corp Dan Bradley, who is also East Sussex County and Rother District Councillor representing Rye, Winchelsea and Eastern Rother, is exceptionally proud of all his cadets. “Rye Pirate Day was a fantastic event and a brilliant example of what can be achieved when a community comes together.”
The marines were involved in a whole range of roles throughout the day, from assisting with road closures and providing medical support, to helping with the clean-up and supporting the organisers wherever they were needed.
“It was fantastic to see our young people working alongside our adult volunteers and other members of the community,” Dan Bradley said. “They represented the Marine Training Corps exceptionally well and demonstrated the importance of volunteering, teamwork, responsibility and giving something back.”
As a local councillor, he said he was delighted Rye was so busy. “It was brilliant to see so many visitors enjoying the event, residents getting involved and local businesses benefiting from the increased footfall. Events like Pirate Day bring a real sense of energy and community spirit to Rye. They showcase what makes our town such a special place and provide an opportunity for local businesses, community groups, volunteers and residents to all play their part. A huge thank you goes to the organisers, all the volunteers, local businesses, residents and visitors who helped make the day such a success.”
