The Tuesday Painters Club was established in 1961 by a group attending a local art class. Exhibitions were organised and other local artists invited to participate. The response was immediate and astounding! Thus the club was formed and an exhibition was organised every year thereafter…with the exceptions of once when the venue was unavailable, and again during the Covid pandemic.
That said, it is not just about the exhibition, although that is the highlight of the year. For instance, a friendly group of members meet up on the last Tuesday of every month at the Tilling Green Community Centre to paint together and learn from each other. Another group meets up in the summer, weather permitting, to paint en plein air. Then there is also a programme of presentations by established and professional artists which are informative, educational and often fun.
Many of our members enjoyed art at school but were unable to take it further. To put it simply, life got in the way, but when they found themselves with time to explore their creativity, it all returned and it brings them such joy. Imagine their pride in seeing their work exhibited, or the buzz experienced when a work is sold!
However, since the pandemic, much has changed. Like many clubs and organisations, our activities are limited by the need for volunteers to help manage them, whether it’s organising a workshop, a trip to a famous gallery or exhibition, or helping with the administration and organisation of the annual exhibition. Why not join us! Enjoy your art, meet up and socialise at the various events and, if you are willing and able, help us run the club for the benefit of all its members.
