“It’s brilliant to see so many of you here today, all dressed up!” Mayor Chris Hoggart told the hundreds of pirates in Rye’s Gun Garden on Saturday 8 August. The second Rye Pirates and Smugglers Day began with a big gathering next to the castle before a parade around town watched by thousands of visitors and locals.
“It was a lovely to see everyone enjoying themselves,” said Zoe Britton, one of the organisers. “I don’t think I’ve ever worked so hard, but it was worth it.”
The costumes were spectacular as Rye celebrated its history of piracy and smuggling. After shanties and drumming, the day began in earnest as a musket was fired from Ypres Tower. The parade took in the town centre ending on the The Strand, with many commenting how good it was to see the riverside full of people.
The free and family friendly event saw re-enactments, a smugglers’ market, more shanties, best dressed competitions for children and adults, plus music on Rye’s Salts. The day ended with the crowning of the Pirate King and Queen, followed by more shanties and music.
The day brought visitors to the town from near and far. “It’s a great atmosphere,” said Terry Parker from Camber visiting with wife Maggie. “So many people enjoying themselves, we’re glad we dressed for the occasion.” They weren’t the only ones. “We tried our best,” said Steve and Martin visiting from Birmingham. “Next year we’ll plan it better and get proper outfits. Some people have really gone for it.”
The whole day was put together by Zoe and Gary Britton, and Matt Summerfield. “It was a spectacular day,” said Zoe. “We’ve so many people to thank. All our supporters have been brilliant, so many people have helped and contributed. We’re really grateful to everyone who joined in.”
She praised the pirate community. “They really are something else, so kind and fun. They made the day really special by throwing their hearts into it. My highlight? The children’s parade was brilliant.”
And 2027? “Watch this space!”
