On Friday, March 6, Troy Smith will be talking about the “Inspiration for Gardening” at Northiam Village Hall from 2:30pm to members of Northiam Horticultural Society. Visitors are very welcome (for a small charge of £2 per person).

Troy has worked for three National Trust gardens including a spell as head gardener at Sissinghurst (pictured above) where he led a seven year renewal project  which included the re-working of the Grecian Garden.

He has also worked at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Sydney and Kew, and he is now head gardener at Ilford Manor near Bradford on Avon outside Bath.

BROAD OAK
The Broad Oak Country Pub and Restaurant in Chitcombe Road, Broad Oak re-opened on February 29 with live entertainment and a buffet.

FAIRLIGHT
On Saturday March 7, the Bowls Club will be holding a coffee morning in the village hall from 10am to 12 noon with free admission. There will be tea, coffee, cake, bacon rolls, all the stalls you might expect and a few rounds of bingo.

PLAYDEN
Playden WI meet in their hall in Houghton Green Lane on Monday, March 9 at 2:30pm to hear about “Ark Animal Encounters”. For more information contact Joan Taylor on 01797 222583 or Sheila Tame on 07834 777613. New members are welcome.

The church of St Thomas the Martyr

WINCHELSEA
St Thomas’ church features a classical music concert on Saturday March 21 at 7:30pm with Anna Wiedemann (violin) and Jonas Gleim (piano). Tickets are £15 (children £7.50) online  or from the Farm Kitchen. The programme features sonatas by Brahms, Ravel and Faure.

BREDE
Brede Farmers Market is Friday, March 6 in the village hall between 9am and 12:30pm.

WINCHELSEA BEACH
Saturday, March 21 features a barn dance in Winchelsea Beach Community Hall in Sea Road. Bring your own snacks, drinks and glasses.

BECKLEY
The next farmers market is March 14 in the village hall from 10am to 12 noon and (hopefully) the newly installed kitchen will be up and running.

APPLEDORE
Saturday, March 28 sees an auction of promises in aid of Appledore church in the village hall from 7pm. Tickets are £5 which includes a bowl of chilli and rice or chicken chasseur and rice or a vegetarian option, plus a pay bar.

Tickets are available in advance (up to March 25) from Donna on 01233 758256 or Fay on 01233 758304. Big and small promises are on offer so there should be something to suit everyone.
